Roses are red … and the leaves are blue!

I decided to treat myself to a new dress – and instantly got two outfits out of it 👍🏾so I’m a very happy lady. I’m terrible at remembering to review my clothing so I’ve made a determined effort this morning to sit down and write.

This is the Candice Danube floral swing dress and it caught my eye because I loved the border pattern element. As a sewer I am always on the lookout for fabrics with borders as they can make a dress look waaayyyy prettier right from the get go.

The downside is that those kinds of fabrics are not cheap and so often, unless I’m truly determined to have it, it’s much more cost effective to buy the readymade garment especially when they’re as pretty as this dress.

To start with let’s talk colour – I was a bit surprised when this arrived because it’s described as white cotton. I can tell you it’s more creamy ivory and reminds me of old lace. I rather like it as I don’t tend to wear completely white dresses and cream is better for my skin tone.
The border is a printed mix of pretty red flowers with two tone blue leaves.

This dress has a gathered skirt and zips up the back with a catch at the top. I usually wear a 12 in all Collectif with the exception of sleeveless dresses with a high round back like this (or like the Astrid). It’s because my shoulders resemble an American footballer’s so I wear a 14 in these designs as I need the room to be able to move without feeling like I’m in a straightjacket. This makes it fitted on top for me and slightly looser on the waist but that’s not a problem as I always belt my outfits. So unless you have a similar issue I’d go with your usual size.

The dress has a small element of stretch in it as it’s cotton sateen and the top is beautifully lined which makes it comfortable and supportive of the top layer.  Oh and did I mention it has pockets!! There are handy side seam pockets tucked away.I adored the colour combinations I could make with this and instantly teamed it with red and then felt the need to go blue!
Both these boleros are Collectif with the red being this season’s new short sleeved jeanie.
As usual I’ve switched everything from my shoes to my snoods, brooches, bangles and hair flowers to complete the changes in outfit.

If you don’t like your skirts too full the gathers mean you can go without a petticoat. As I’m very much a petticoat wearer I’ve still popped one underneath. At 25inches the skirt is knee length but again with the gathers is not that obvious that it’s a little shorter. I’m not one for showing my petticoats so I’m wearing a 23inch petticoat.

It’s a lovely comfortable dress and I’m sure I’m going to wear it a lot this summer (whenever that decides to arrive!)
This style of dress is so easy to make super smart or just casual. I’ll upscale it with either one of my short blue or red jackets and stockings. Or I’ll go more casual with sandals or espadrilles and a red or blue straw hat – we all know how I love a good straw hat!

So are you team blue or team red?

  1. I simply cannot decide, both are very lovely and it is funny how different changing one colour makes the outfit look. And I also have broad shoulders! 😀 Have a lovely day, dear.
